Author Douglas Adams died unexpectedly on May 11, 2001 at age 49. Adams was the creator of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," the work he is perhaps best known for, and in which we learn that the Ultimate Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything is 42.
Fans organized a wake called "Towel Day" to take place two weeks later, May 25, 2001. It was such a success (as if a wake could be a success) that it has been held annually on May 25.
This year, Towel Day falls on 5/25/12, which is numerically auspicious. You see, 5 + 25 + 12 = 42.
