Wednesday Weigh-In 20100630

I found a Chicken of the Woods in our backyard a while ago. I harvested it on Saturday. We've been eating it all week.

Here's a picture of it. It's about 12" in diameter.

The Three Rs and the F-word

Thanks to her public school education, our pre-teen daughter has mastered the F-word. She has described how the girls in her class routinely pollute their conversations with F-words, "What the Effa-effa-effa are you effa-effa-effa doing, effa?"

But yesterday, when the laptop over-heated and suddenly shutdown during the ultimate game-winning battle with Captain Crawfish, she demonstrated complete mastery:

"Oh f*ck," she said, like a twenty year old, at the refilling station, with a maxed out credit card and an empty gas tank.

In less than four years, she'll be driving the car, or so she reminds me.

Wednesday Weigh-In 20100623

The Romaine lettuce in our garden is growing beautifully. I'm picking off some of the outer leaves before they curl into the head. These leaves are a wonderful solid green color, unlike the stuff in the supermarket. Apparently commercial growers plant their lettuce more close together than I, because their leaves are mostly yellow or light green.

I'm so lucky to have the space for a garden!

Wednesday Weigh-In 20100616

I wrote earlier that I now realize that when I eat good foods, I don't need to eat a big meal in order to keep from passing out before my next meal. And I actually enjoy the sensation of not feeling full after a meal. So that's really driving this spurt of weight loss.

But there is a big motivator I haven't mentioned before. It's my hernia. I'm considering having surgery to patch it up, and I want to be trim going into that surgery. When it's over, the scar will be aligned with the waist line of my pants, and I don't want pressure there. Also, it seems that the pressure of the hernia is worse when I am engorged. Maybe I'm hoping that the hernia will heal itself if I become skinny.

There is also the fact that I don't want medical folks to look at me on the table and comment, "Eeeewwww, look at that fat!"

Shadow Shot Sunday Hutch

Here's an indoor shot. The clouds are so thick today, there are no shadows to be seen outside.

This is a relatively new piece of furniture for the office. We've decided to trade in some book shelf space for cabinet space, which allows us to confine bulky items in boxes and stow them away out of sight.

Wednesday Weigh-In 20100609

A few weeks ago, I decided to start eating dandelion leaves. They grow on our property, and since I don't use herbicides or pesticides, I think they should be fine to eat. I add three leaves to my salad, and I don't notice any funny taste.

A few days ago I reviewed the special protocol for cardiovascular support in the family of Blood Type Diet books. It turns out that dandelion is Super Beneficial. I wonder, is that a coincidence, or did my body know that?

Shadow Shot Sunday Backyard Lawn in Afternoon

The wickedly, oppressively, overcast and humid day changed dramatically, and I was able to get this shot.

Spring Concert Tip

This is the time of year for Spring Concerts in our neck of the woods. You may be attending one soon for the first time.

Here's a tip. Before the orchestra's performance, when all the student performers have seated themselves and have settled down, stay alert for the first violinist to stride on stage. As soon as you see her1, start clapping. Don't wait for her to get to center stage and bow before acknowledging her. Do the same for the conductor. They will appreciate it.

While on the topic of applause, remember to withhold your applause until after the music has stopped and after the conductor has lowered his hands.

By following this advice, you will show that you're a sophisticated audience, and the performers will regard your applause with even greater appreciation.

1 The first violinist is usually a girl at the elementary school level. Girls are taller and more mature than boys at that age, and they're more likely to dress nicer for the role. Of course, this is just my opinion and has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that my daughter is a girl.
