About What We Carry

's latest post "Writing is good for the soul" includes a list of 10 items that she always carries with her.  I've been thinking lately of all that I carry, so it caught my attention.

Here's a list of nine items I always carry, plus a few additional items for outings that I know will involve waiting, such as taking our daughter to karate lessons or visiting the DMV:
  • Wallet with ID, credit cards, library card, health insurance card, plus several passwords for favorite websites.  Sometimes it has some cash in it, as well.
  • Keys
  • Coins
  • Handkerchief
  • Dental flosser / pick
  • USB Memory Stick
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Lo Carb snack bar
  • Water
  • Not Always: A Book
  • Not Always: Memo pad & pencil
  • Not Always: Camera
I don't use a purse so I rely on my pockets or I hang things on my belt or belt loops with carabiners.  The less I carry, the better.  A jacket comes in very handy until it becomes a burden in summer.

The reason I'm thinking of things I carry is because I'm wondering if I really want to buy an Android Tablet, or even a Nook.  I like the idea that I might be able to write or at least read while waiting around.

But I hate the idea of carrying something delicate like that around.  I suspect that it would become a burden and that I'd leave it home often.  I think I'd need a way to stow it in a shoulder harness, which is how I carry my camera now.

Incidentally, if you really looked closely at my list, you might have thought, "Silly guy, he forgot to list his cell phone."  No, I did not forget.  I don't have a cell phone!

What do you always carry?  Do you ever wish you carried less?

I do have a cell phone thanks to a disability service but tend to forget to take it with me, so I definitely can't list it as an "always."

1. keys
2. tissues
3. sunglasses
4. backpack with wallet (ID cards and all that good stuff and very rarely cash not counting coins), two large canvas shopping bags, notebook, misc pens, Tylenol and Imitrex, TicTacs, Chapstick, water bottle, bandaids, hand sanitizer, bus schedules, extra cell phone charger (this was added after the surprise trip to the local shelter during the fire in the apartment highrise boiler room) and errm... "necessary things for the part of the population who isn't male" xD

5. not always but most often: tiny 2GB lamebrand mp3 player and large-size Sony headphones

What should be on the list as an "always" is a mini-Maglight (keychain version) on a glow-in-the-dark compass keychain but the Maglight bulb died and thus it's sat on a table instead waiting for me to replace the flashlight. For a while now. O.o;;

Hmm, this is making me wonder what's in my wife's 35lb purse... LOL
