Are You a Renaissance Soul?

Have you ever had someone say to you, "I just wish you could find whatever it is that makes you happy and just do it"? Have you ever felt a pang of envy hearing someone say, "Ever since she was a kid she knew just what she wanted to be..."? Do you feel like a "dilettante", a "jack of all trades, master of none"? Does that one job, that one position that will define you, keep eluding you?
So asks Margaret Lobenstine on her website.

To find out if you're a Renaissance Soul, take the quiz!

Well yes and no. I always find these quiz things to be unsatisfying cause I always fall right smack-dab in the middle with no definitive answer either way :-) In my case, it's just ADHD!! I've staye in the same profession all my life (teaching) and always knew I wanted to be a teacher. Yet on the flip side, I've continued my education many times throughout the years to add new subject areas and new kinds of teaching. So on the one hand I'm steady in my goals and on the other hand, I go about getting there in many different ways. And that probably all made no sense whatsoever! lol

Hey Sherlock:

I can identify with your comment. I've always been in the field of electronic design. But my "spare time" interests have varied. And in my profession, there's enough slack in the job to allow someone to move from one interest to another -- from, say, database design to learning a new programming language, to process control, to design automation, etc.

So I consider myself a full-blown RS despite the fact that I've been working at the same place for 16 years!

Thanks for commenting!

Hi Delirious, now I'm curious to know how the general population would score on this quiz and whether there's any correlation to Myers-Briggs personality type.

It might make an interesting study for a graduate student!

Thanks for posting.

Definitely a dilettante.

I find the choice of "wired like Franklin" a little odd, as he (and Jefferson) was a master of many fields. He did not dabble but had very real accomplishments in writing, science, politics, diplomacy, and civic leadership. That's what makes him such an amazing figure.

9 yesses... I be Renaissancy... not like I need a quiz to tell me that. xD ...but... I'd much rather hang out with Mozart than Franklin. O__o;;

Anyways. I read through the entire blog (phear mindless Digimon xp grinding) and if I were coherent (I need sleep as usual) I'd leave something profound or witty or... at least grammatically correct.

Instead I'll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite oldschool PC games which really struck me as epic, considering my love for antiheroes:

"...And yet I would gladly be the destroyer who undestroys, the dangerous one who protects."
~The Creator, LucasArts The Dig

Yeah. Sleep would help. Did I forget to mention I had a great time reading this? Especially the dreams! ^^ I wish life didn't throw you and your family so much crap tho. x_x ...I'd like to know where you signed the release form for that, previous to being born. ^^;

Hi Slywy:

Good point. But I think the author is less focused on ability / accomplishment than on field(s) of interest.

Thanks for commenting!

Tirsden! :glomp:

Thank you so much for your kind comments!

This makes me think of the only episode of Fantasy Island I can remember. It's the one where the guy wants to run through the jungle while people try to kill him. I guess our unborn souls were similarly bored with thoughts of a comfortable existance. Or it could be that we complain way too much! :)

Hi squarepegperson!

The more you talk to people about your interests, the more leads you get. I mentioned to someone that I like Barbara Sher's "Wishcraft" and lamented that there are so many things I'd like to do and so little time. That's when I got referred to "The Renaissance Soul." I found out about "Wishcraft" when I commented that I really love Shakti Gawain's "Creative Visualization," which I stumbled upon while making friends in the self-help section of Waldenbooks about 25 years ago.

Anyway, thanks for visiting and commenting! I hope you'll stay for more than 10 minutes next time! (Just kidding).

SPG: Yeah, ironically when I think of all the character torture I put my written subjects through... and yet how much they value life regardless (or how much I value their imaginary lives)... it really makes me wonder about my own "torture" and the possibility of wondering if somebody is "writing" it.

Meanwhile, there's still so much stuff that's utter pointless pain so MEH. *eats rice and discusses questionable story material with AIM buddy* xD
